First Visit
On your first visit to our office, your child will be introduced to a new environment and new faces. It is expected that they may experience some apprehension and therefore, we have designed the first visit to ease their fears. Our staff, while focused on your child’s dental needs, will gain your child’s trust and confidence. We understand each child is unique; it is our goal to get to know them and to let them know we have their best interest in mind, all while having a good time.
If your child is experiencing discomfort or is referred to our office by your general dentist for treatment, he or she will see Dr. Tawadros and an assistant. During this appointment we will review the child's medical and dental history, take any necessary x-rays discuss your child's present dental needs along with the recommended course of treatment.
If your child is not experiencing dental problems and it is time for their regular preventative visit, or it is time for their first visit (see next question), he or she will see our hygienist (who is absolutely wonderful) first and then, Dr. Tawadros. During this appointment we will review your child's medical and dental history, take any necessary x-rays, perform a cleaning and fluoride treatment, and discuss your child's present dental needs along with any recommended treatment. We will also assess your child for any risk factors for developing dental problems and give you help to prevent these from occurring.
When should I schedule my child's first appointment?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child visit the dentist by his or her 1st birthday. While it is unlikely we will provide treatment for your one year old, there is a wealth of knowledge that we will pass on to you as a parent. Helping you prevent dental problems through education is our main goal, and instructing parents on proper care of children’s teeth is vital to that prevention.
Our goal for any child is to make dental visits quick and easy. Dr. Tawadros will always provide a thorough examination and talk with you about any issues of concern. The treatment provided at each visit will mirror your child’s confidence and trust in us. With maturity and comfort with our office, the services we are able to provide your child will most likely increase. We will never push your child past their tolerance level, yet each visit is approached with a hope we will accomplish a full preventive care visit which includes examination, cleaning, fluoride treatment and appropriate radiographs.
You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive by doing several things:
- Let your child know they are coming, and that Dr. Tawadros and his staff will explain everything and answer any questions. We have found that no matter how well-intentioned explanations about “What’s going to happen..,” the anxiety level of your child will rise. Let us walk your little one through a visit.
- It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, shot, pull, drill or hurt. We make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
- Your child is able to sense your anxiety with great acuity, so please remember we have you and your child’s best interest in mind. If you approach the visit in a casual manner the chances are much be tter that your child will do the same.
We invite you to be present with your child during every visit to our practice, including treatment. It is our hope as well as yours, that preventive care appointments scheduled every six months will comprise the majority of visits to our office. We strive to make each and every visit to our office a positive experience!
